After 7 months, the Competition Commission of India (CCI) will have a new chairperson in place from Tuesday, May 23, 2023. Since Ashok Kumar Gupta resigned from the position in October 2022, the government has now chosen the chairperson on a full-time basis. She was appointed on May 15, 2023.
The Union Finance Minister and Corporate Affairs Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman swore in Smt. Ravneet Kaur as the Chairperson of Competition Commission of India. The other members are Sangeeta Varma and Bhagwant Singh Bishnoi.
Smt. Ravneet Kaur is a 1988 batch Punjab cadre IAS officer will be there as the Chairperson for next 5 years or the date of attaining her age of 65 years. Smt. Sangeeta Verma was the acting/ad hoc chairperson till the new appointment.
The basic goals of the Indian Competition Commission are to uphold free trade in India, safeguard consumer interests, and encourage and maintain fair competition in the marketplace. The CCI oversees and upholds the nation’s competition regulations.
Right now, the Competition Commission of India is dealing with a lot of high profile cases related to google, apple..etc. Also, after withdrawal of National Anti-profiteering Authority (NAA), the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) directed the CCI to take up the cases related to that.
However, it’s been 6 months and the CCI was not able to dispose of a single case related to anti-profiteering due to the absence of quorum. NAA was withdrawn with effect from December 1, 2022.

As the full-time chairperson has been appointed, it is expected that the Competition Commision of India will set up enough quorum to dispose of the anti profiteering cases.
