The Income Tax Department on Tuesday (08-04-2025) conducted searches at five locations of real estate company Ansal API in Lucknow, including its well-known office in Sushant Golf City. The raids are part of a broader investigation into claims of tax evasion and property fraud.

According to the Hindustan Times report, this development follows more than 50 FIRs filed since March 4 against Ansal API in Lucknow and other cities across Uttar Pradesh. The complaints allege that the company cheated investors by taking money for flats and plots but failing to hand over possession.

A senior Income Tax official confirmed that a unit from Delhi carried out the searches after receiving reliable information about large-scale tax evasion by the company, officially known as Ansal Properties and Infrastructure Limited. The raids also covered the residences of the company’s directors, where documents related to property sales, financial records, and investor transactions were examined.

“The investigation is aimed at finding differences between what the company actually received from buyers and what it declared in its records,” the official said. A valuer accompanied the team to help assess the value of properties and assets at the searched locations.

The Income Tax raids come shortly after the Uttar Pradesh government took a firm stand on the matter. It had directed development authorities in Lucknow, Ghaziabad, and Gautam Buddh Nagar to file FIRs against Ansal API for violating building and planning rules, and for cheating buyers by not delivering the promised properties despite collecting large sums of money.

The issue also reached the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly. During the budget session on March 5, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath made a strong statement, warning that the company’s properties would be seized if it did not return money to the affected investors. He also promised full support to the victims and emphasized that the government would not tolerate fraud in the real estate sector.

The current Income Tax operation is expected to continue for several days as officials go through a large number of financial documents to identify the full extent of alleged wrongdoing. This move reflects the increasing pressure on real estate companies to stay transparent and fulfill their commitments, especially in a sector that often faces issues of delays, fraud, and investor disputes.
