The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has issued Notification No. S.O. 884(E) dated February 19, 2025, announcing an amendment to the Copper Product (Quality Control) Order, 2024. The amendment grants a temporary exemption for certain imported copper products used in manufacturing, valid until March 31, 2025.
According to the notification, the Copper Product (Quality Control) Amendment Order, 2025 was introduced after consultations with the Bureau of Indian Standards ( BIS ). The exemption applies specifically to wrought copper tubes used for refrigeration and air-conditioning purposes.

Manufacturers who import these goods for domestic production will be allowed to do so without quality control restrictions, provided that the imported quantity does not exceed 25% of the total value of goods imported during the financial year 2023-24.
The notification states:
“Provided also that this order shall not apply from the commencement of the Copper Products (Quality Control) Amendment Order, 2025, for a period up to the 31st March, 2025, to goods or articles imported by a manufacturer for the purposes of manufacturing equipment or product or sub-assemblies or components in India mentioned under column (1) of the Table below, up to the value of goods or articles specified under column (2) of the said Table, namely:”
