In what could be a big relief for highway users, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, has confirmed that the government will soon announce a new toll tax policy aimed at reducing the burden on the common man.

Speaking to news platform Rising Bharat, Gadkari said that the new policy is almost ready, and the final announcement will be made within 8 to 10 days. He explained that while he never promised to make highways completely toll-free, he had assured earlier that people who pay tolls regularly would be happy with the new changes.

“I didn’t say that highways would be toll-free. What I said was that people paying toll tax will feel happy, because we are bringing a new policy that will definitely provide them relief,” said Gadkari.

According to the minister, the government has studied the current toll system in detail and found ways to improve it. Although he did not share exact details, Gadkari hinted that the new system could be more efficient, fair, and technology-driven.

There have been talks in the past about introducing a satellite-based toll system, which charges vehicles based on the actual distance they travel on highways instead of collecting fixed amounts at toll booths. When asked if this new system is satellite-based, Gadkari said the government has examined various options and is now in the final stages of implementing the best one.

He also confirmed that toll charges will definitely be reduced under the new policy. “Toll will 100% come down,” he said. However, when asked if tolls would be reduced to zero, he replied, “I can’t say exactly how much it will be, but those paying tolls today will be very happy with the changes.”

This move is expected to benefit lakhs of commuters, especially daily travelers who use national highways for work, business, and transport. Many people have complained in recent years about high toll charges, multiple toll booths on short routes, and long waiting times. A new and improved toll system could make road travel faster, cheaper, and more convenient.

The government’s upcoming announcement is highly anticipated, and many expect that it could completely change how toll is collected in India.
