A lawyer tried to throw a shoe at Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai inside the Supreme Court on Monday. The incident happened during a hearing in Court No. 1 and caused a brief moment of chaos before security officers stopped him.

The lawyer has been identified as Rakesh Kishore, who is enrolled with the Bar Council of Delhi Witnesses said he took off his sports shoes and tried to throw one at the Chief Justice while shouting, “Sanatan ka apmaan nahi sahega Hindustan.” Security staff quickly caught him and removed him from the courtroom.

Chief Justice Gavai stayed calm and continued the hearing after the situation was brought under control.

Soon after the incident, the Bar Council of India (BCI) suspended Rakesh Kishore’s license to practice law. The BCI said his actions were against professional ethics and showed serious disrespect to the court.

The Council also started disciplinary proceedings against him and sent a notice asking him to explain his behavior within 15 days. Until the case is decided, he cannot appear in any court or tribunal in India. All courts and bar associations have been informed, and his court entry passes have been cancelled.

BCI Chairman Manan Kumar Mishra said this is an interim suspension and further action will be taken after the disciplinary process.

The Supreme Court Bar Association and the Supreme Court Advocates-on-Record Association strongly condemned the act. They called it shameful and said it goes against the dignity of the legal profession. They also expressed full support for the Chief Justice and urged all lawyers to maintain discipline and respect in the courtroom.

The incident may be linked to the CJI’s recent comments in a case about the restoration of a Vishnu idol in Khajuraho. The Chief Justice has already clarified that he respects all religions.
