The Ministry ofCorporate Affairs has appointed Bachu Venkat Balaram Das as the President of the Tribunal for a period of six months with effect from March 17, 2026.

Das, is the senior-most member of the Tribunal and currently serves as a Member (Judicial). His appointment shall stand for a period of six months from March 17, 2026 or until a regular President is appointed, or until further orders, whichever may be earlier.

Bachu Venkat Balaram Das brings with him over three decades of experience in litigation and government service. He was enrolled as an Advocate with the Orissa State Bar Council in January 1986 and has practiced before the Orissa High Court and the Supreme Court of India.

Das later joined the Central Agency Section of the Department of Legal Affairs, Ministry of Law and Justice, as Assistant Government Advocate and served in various capacities.

On the judicial front, Das served as Presiding Officer of the Employees’ Provident Fund Appellate Tribunal in Bengaluru between April 2016 and July 2017, and also held additional charge at Delhi for a brief period.

Following the merger of tribunals, he was repatriated to the Central Agency Section in July 2017 and appointed as Member (Judicial) at the NCLT, New Delhi Bench.

Das’ latest appointment as president comes following an earlier arrangement earlier where Deep Chandra Joshi, Member (Judicial) and the then senior-most member of the NCLT was designated President of the Tribunal from February 14, 2026 onwards, who took office after the completion of the tenure of Justice (Retired) Ramalingam Sudhakar on February 13, 2026.

The latest notification dated March 16, 2026 and issued by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs states that the appointment has been made exercising powers under Section 415(1) of the Companies Act, 2013, which enables the appointment of a President or acting President to ensure continuity in the functioning of the Tribunal.
