Enjoying a live IPL match or a night at the casino may soon become far more expensive. The 56th meeting of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council was held at Sushma Swaraj Bhavan in New Delhi on September 03, 2025, chaired by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, has proposed a sharp hike in Goods and Services Tax (GST) on entry tickets to casinos, race clubs, and sporting events like the Indian Premier League (IPL). The rate will rise from 28% to 40% with input tax credit (ITC).

For cricket fans, this could mean steeper IPL ticket prices. Already sold at premium rates in major cities, tickets are expected to get even costlier as organisers pass on the tax hike to consumers. Casinos and race clubs too may see reduced footfall as entry charges rise.

The business world has reacted quickly. Gaming and entertainment stocks fell after the announcement. Shares of Delta Corp and Nazara Technologies slid by up to 7%, reflecting concerns over reduced margins and weaker demand in the gaming and casino sector.

The 40% GST will not apply to recognised sporting events such as official international matches and national tournaments. These events will continue to follow the regular GST framework.

The new GST rates on most goods and services will kick in from September 22, 2025. For IPL and casino tickets, the timeline may depend on how the Centre phases in the new system, but fans are warned to brace for higher costs.

This move balances relief on essentials with higher taxation on non-essential, high-risk, or luxury activities. But for IPL lovers and casino-goers, the headline is simple: be ready to pay more for your ticket.
