The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has further extended the due date for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for the Assessment Year (AY) 2025–26 by one day. The deadline, which was originally July 31, 2025, and later extended to September 15, 2025, will now stand extended to September 16, 2025.
The extension applies to all taxpayers who were required to file their returns by July 31, 2025. The decision provides additional time for taxpayers and professionals struggling with portal-related issues and last-minute filing challenges.

In its official communication, CBDT clarified:
“The Central Board of Direct Taxes has decided to further extend the due date for filing these ITRs for AY 2025–26 from 15th September 2025 to 16th September 2025.”
Alongside the extension, CBDT announced a short maintenance window on the Income Tax e-filing portal to enable necessary changes. The e-filing system will remain unavailable from 12:00 AM to 2:30 AM on September 16, 2025. Taxpayers have been advised to plan their filings accordingly.
The press release emphasized that a formal notification/order will follow separately to give effect to this extension.
This marks the second extension of the ITR deadline for AY 2025–26, first from July 31, 2025 to September 15, 2025, and now to September 16, 2025.
The announcement is expected to ease concerns of taxpayers, Chartered Accountants, and tax practitioners who had raised issues of technical glitches and slowdowns on the portal during peak hours of compliance. However, given the high volume of filings yet to be completed, experts caution that the system could face renewed strain as the revised deadline approaches.
With only one extra day granted, taxpayers are urged not to wait until the last minute to avoid disruptions during the final hours. The Income Tax Department has reiterated its commitment to ensuring smooth operations of the portal during this extended window.
