The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a Superintendent and an Inspector of the Santacruz Division of the Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) department in Mumbai. The officers were arrested by the central bureau for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of ₹25,000 from a complainant to issue a favourable report and facilitate the Goods and Services Tax (GST) registration of a private firm.

According to an official press release issued by the CBI on October 8, 2025, a case was registered against the officers on October 7, 2025 on the basis of allegations that the two CGST officials demanded an undue advantage of ₹25,000 for providing a favourable inspection report. The complainant is engaged in the business of textile trading and had applied online for GST registration on September 24, 2025.

However, during the inspection conducted on October 3, 2025, the accused Inspector allegedly demanded the bribe for himself and his superior officer. The officer was also said to have warned the complainant that the GST Registration Certificate would not be issued without payment of the demanded amount.

Acting on the intel received from the complainant, the CBI laid a trap operation and caught both the officers red-handed while accepting the bribe amount of ₹25,000 at the CGST West Mumbai Office on October 7, 2025. Subsequently, the bureau conducted searches at the premises of the accused officers.

The CBI has stated that the arrested officers would be produced before the competent court today (Wednesday - 08 October, 2025). The CBI has confirmed that further investigation is underway.
