The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a Superintendent of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) in Ranipet for allegedly receiving a bribe amount of ₹15,000.
The GST officials also apprehended an Inspector within the Department who attempted to subvert the investigation and attempted to destroy evidence by flushing the bribe amount down a toilet.
A complaint was registered on April 7, 2026 alleging that the GST Superintendent in the Ranipet Range had demanded an undue advantage of ₹30,000 from the complainant for facilitating clearance of GST registration.
The demanded bribe amount was later renegotiated to ₹15,000. Acting upon the intel, the CBI laid out a trap on April 7, 2026. The trap operation revealed that a GST Inspector also posted in the Ranipet Range was also involved in the crime.
As per a press release by the CBI, the Inspector attempted to conceal the trap amount in a toilet commode and flushed it down in an effort to destroy the evidence. However, the attempt was to no avail as the investigating officials were able to recover the bribe amount from the toilet.
