The Special CBI Court in Patna on Monday sentenced a Senior Accountant with the Postal Department, to two years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of ₹1.10 lakh in a case of fraud and impersonation.

The case, which dates back to 2014, was registered by the Central Bureau ofInvestigation (CBI) on 31st March 2014 against the senior accountant and others. The charges from serious allegations that, while serving as a Senior Accountant in the Office of the Director of Accounts, Postal Department, Patna, between 2010 and 2013, Mr. Bhagat fraudulently used the fictitious identity of “Lalit Bhagat” to get himself appointed as Vice-Chairman of the Bihar State Scheduled Tribes Commission, a post meant for an entirely different office and purpose.

The investigations revealed that Mr. Bhagat and Lalit Bhagat were, in fact, the same person. Exploiting the dual identity, Bhagat managed to draw salaries from both departments simultaneously.

Between July 2010 and July 2011, he drew a salary of ₹3.41 lakh from the Government ofIndia for his role in the Postal Department and ₹14.87 lakh from the Government of Bihar in his capacity as Vice-Chairman of the Commission. Additionally, he availed other benefits such as a leased vehicle allowance of ₹32,850 per month.

The fraudulent conduct not only resulted in an unlawful personal gain but also caused financial losses to both the Central and State governments. The accused enriched himself through these illegal means, amounting to a total misappropriation exceeding ₹18 lakh.

After a thorough probe, the CBI filed a chargesheet on 31st March 2015, detailing the duplicity and misrepresentation committed by Bhagat. After examining the evidence and hearing arguments, the Special CBI Court found the accused guilty and convicted him under relevant sections of the law.
