The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested an Income Tax Inspector from Vijayawada and a private person acting as a middleman for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs. 70,000 from a businessman. The arrest has shocked the local community and raised fresh concerns about corruption in tax enforcement.

According to officials, the CBI registered a case on July 29, 2025, after receiving a complaint from a man who runs a mobile service shop in Ramachandra Rao Peta, Eluru. The businessman claimed that he was approached by a tout or middleman who said he was speaking on behalf of an officer in the office of the Commissioner of Income Tax.

The middleman demanded a bribe of Rs. 5 lakh. In return, the officer would ensure that no action would be taken on certain petitions received against the businessman and no income tax raid would be carried out on his shop.

The businessman said he could not afford such a large bribe. After further discussion, the bribe amount was lowered to Rs. 1.2 lakh. Of this amount, Rs. 1 lakh was to be given to the tax officer and Rs. 20,000 to the middleman.

Acting on the complaint, the CBI set a trap. On July 29, they caught the middleman red-handed while accepting Rs. 70,000 from the complainant. The money was being collected on behalf of the Income Tax Inspector. Both the middleman and the officer were arrested shortly after.

The CBI stated that both accused individuals will be presented before the Special Judge for CBI cases in Vijayawada. Searches are also being conducted at various locations related to the accused.

The investigation is still going on. The CBI has not ruled out the possibility of more people being involved in the case. This incident has once again highlighted the serious issue of bribery in government offices. There is a need for stricter controls and more transparency in the functioning of tax departments to prevent such incidents in the future.
