In a major administrative move, the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has selected 95 officers for the position of Assistant Commissioner of Customs & Indirect Taxes on an ad-hoc basis through Office Order No. 25/2026 dated February 25, 2026.

This is a continuation of the efforts of the Board to meet the requirements of the functions.

As per the order, the promoted officers who are being selected from the feeder cadres of Superintendent of Central Excise and Superintendent of Customs shall work in Level 10 of the pay matrix with the corresponding pre-revised Grade Pay of ₹5400.

The promotions will be effective from September 30, 2025, and will remain in force until further orders, with the existing temporary arrangement extended up to December 18, 2027.

It has been clarified by CBIC that the appointments are purely ad-hoc and do not create any right to regular appointment. The service put in at the higher level will not be taken into account for seniority purposes or for the purpose of future promotions.

The appointments are also made subject to the final outcome of proceedings pending before the Supreme Court in SLP (C) No. 30621/2011 and other related matters.

Notably, the appointments are also required to be cleared for vigilance and are based on recommendations from the Union Public Service Commission.

Officers who are under suspension or are involved in disciplinary or criminal cases are not eligible to take charge. Until the official appointment, the officers will continue to work in their present location on an in-situ basis.
