The Ministry of Finance, Department of Revenue, Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) issued Notification No. 17/2025-Central Tax dated 18 October 2025, extending the due date for filing GSTR-3B returns under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) law.

Interestingly, even before this official notification was released, the GST portal had already displayed the new due date of 25 October 2025 for GSTR-3B filing. The change appeared on the portal on 17 October 2025 under the “Monthly Return - GSTR-3B” section, creating buzz among taxpayers and professionals, as the usual due date is the 20th of every month for most filers.

As per the official CBIC notification, the time limit for filing GSTR-3B has been extended as follows:

  • For Monthly Filers (under Section 39(1) of the CGST Act): The due date for September 2025 is now 25 October 2025, instead of 20 October.
  • For Quarterly Filers (QRMP Scheme) covering July–September 2025, the due date has also been extended to 25 October 2025.

The notification has been issued by the Commissioner under the powers of sub-section (6) of Section 39, read with Section 168 of the CGST Act, 2017, following the recommendations of the GST Council.

This decision may be taken to ease compliance pressure on businesses, particularly during the Diwali festive season, when many traders and companies are busy managing sales, stock, and logistics.

Chartered Accountants, Professionals have welcomed the move as this extension will help businesses reconcile data, verify input tax credits, and file accurate returns without rushing. It also avoids the last-minute congestion and technical glitches often seen on the GST portal before deadlines.

The notification was signed by Raushan Kumar, Under Secretary, CBIC.
