CBIC Intensifies Price Tracking Post GST Cuts, Govt Assures Full Pass-through to Consumers: Finance Ministry

The Central Board of Indirect Taxes & Customs ( CBIC ) has in full on path for tracking the price post-GST cuts. The Finance Ministry, while answering to the questions before the Lok Sabha said that the board is closely working with the trade bodies..etc to make sure the benefits are passed to the final consumers.
After the GST Council implemented rate rationalisation in its 56th meeting on 3 September 2025, the Government initiated a multi-layered system to ensure that companies do not retain the gains arising from lower tax rates.
Following the GST rate reduction from 22 September 2025, CBIC began tracking the prices of key commodities, especially packaged food items and medicines to check any mismatch between reduced GST rates and final retail prices, answered the Finance Ministry to the questions raised by MP Anto Antony.

According to the data received so far, CBIC informed that companies have passed on the benefits of tax cuts to consumers. Additionally, it was answered that the Chairman of CBIC held meetings with major trade associations and representatives of various ministries. These industry bodies were directed to ensure that their members reduce prices appropriately and fully transfer GST reduction benefits to customers.
To prevent confusion for goods manufactured before the rate cut, the Department of Consumer Affairs issued an advisory on 18 September 2025. Manufacturers and importers were permitted to place an additional revised MRP sticker on unsold products lying in stock, as long as the original printed price remained visible.
The Finance Ministry also undertook widespread awareness campaigns through newspapers, social media and FAQs on the CBIC website.
The ministry said that appropriate action is being taken on complaints registered on the National Consumer Helpline when supported by documentary evidence.
