The Ministry of Finance, Department of Financial Services, has issued a notification dated 25 February 2026 allowing TransUnion CIBIL Limited to use Aadhaar authentication for identity verification on its platform.
As per the notification, TransUnion CIBIL has been permitted to use Aadhaar authentication to verify the identity of users who access credit information reports. The approval was granted after consultation with the Unique Identification Authority of India and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
The government stated that Aadhaar helps individuals establish identity easily and reduces the need for multiple documents. It also improves transparency and efficiency in delivering services.

The Aadhaar authentication by CIBIL will be used only for specific purposes. These include:
- User registration on the CIBIL platform
- User login to access credit information reports
- Identity verification through Yes or No authentication or e-KYC
The notification clearly states that Aadhaar authentication will be voluntary. Users cannot be forced to use Aadhaar for accessing their credit reports. Before carrying out authentication, TransUnion CIBIL must obtain the consent of the Aadhaar holder.
The agency cannot deny services if a person refuses to use Aadhaar or is unable to complete Aadhaar authentication. In such cases, alternative identity documents must be accepted. These include:
- Permanent Account Number Card
- Passport
- Voter Identity Card
- Driving Licence
- Ration Card
This move is expected to make the process of accessing credit reports faster and more seamless for users who choose Aadhaar verification. At the same time, the notification maintains safeguards by making the process voluntary and ensuring that alternative identification options remain available.
