The Monsoon Session of Parliament commenced on a tumultuous note Monday as a sharp confrontation broke out between the ruling government and opposition members over U.S. President Donald Trump’s controversial remarks concerning “Operation Sindoor” and claims of brokering peace between India and Pakistan. Notably, major bills like the Income Tax Bill, 2025 and many Shipping and Maritime Legislations.
The day witnessed uproarious scenes, intense sloganeering, and repeated adjournments, with opposition MPs demanding an immediate discussion on Trump’s assertions and the recent Pahalgam terror attack. The Lok Sabha was adjourned twice within the first hour of proceedings, while the Rajya Sabha experienced a heated exchange between Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and BJP chief J.P. Nadda.

Even before the House convened, several opposition MPs, including Randeep Surjewala, Manickam Tagore, Renuka Chowdhury, and Sandosh Kumar P, submitted notices under Rule 267 to suspend business and discuss the Operation Sindoor revelations and the Pahalgam attack. Rule 267 of the Rajya Sabha Rules of Procedure allows for the suspension of a day’s agenda with the Chairman’s consent.
Addressing the media before the session began, Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the Monsoon Session as a "Vijayotsav" and hailed India’s military prowess displayed during Operation Sindoor. He praised the collective efforts of all parties in exposing Pakistan’s terror affiliations on the international stage.
However, the Lok Sabha proceedings unraveled rapidly. Barely 20 minutes after the session began, right after the obituaries, opposition MPs began raising slogans such as “PM Modi jawab do,” demanding a direct response to Trump’s statements. Speaker Om Birla urged members to wait until after the Question Hour and assured that ample time would be provided for discussion. Nevertheless, the continued protest led to adjournment till noon.

In the Rajya Sabha, Kharge launched a scathing attack on the government, citing the April 22 Pahalgam attack as an “intelligence failure” and demanding an official explanation on both the attack and Operation Sindoor. He also sought clarification on Trump’s repeated claims of brokering a ceasefire between India and Pakistan.
Responding strongly, Leader of the House J.P. Nadda reiterated that the government was fully prepared to present details of Operation Sindoor. He stated, “There has never been such an operation in Indian history. Under PM Modi’s leadership, we carried out something unprecedented. We want to talk, and we will.”
The Upper House too was adjourned following their exchange.

After the resumption, Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu updated Parliament on the Air India AI-171 crash in Ahmedabad that claimed 260 lives. Notably, India is handling the damaged black box domestically for the first time. Naidu emphasized the inquiry’s adherence to international standards and reaffirmed India’s commitment to an unbiased investigation.
Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, accused the treasury benches of denying him the opportunity to speak. “If the Defence Minister can speak, why is the Opposition gagged?” he asked, calling it a breach of parliamentary convention.
