The Ministry of Commerce and Industry, through the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), issued Notification No. 47/2025-26 dated November 4, 2025, announcing important changes in the export policy of Red Sanders (Pterocarpus Santalinus).

Restriction on Exports:

Export of Red Sanders wood in log form and roots is allowed only if it comes from cultivated sources such as private or Patta land. Such exports are restricted and can be carried out only after getting a Restricted Export Authorisation from the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT).

Documents Required:

Anyone applying for permission to export Red Sanders must provide:

  • A Certificate of Origin issued by the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) of the concerned state, confirming that the wood has been legally obtained.
  • A certificate showing the current stock position, verified on-site by a forest officer.

Conditions for Approval:

  • Each export application will be examined carefully and must follow the CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) rules.
  • The CITES Management Authority of India, under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC), will decide the annual export limits based on sustainability studies known as National Detrimental Findings (NDF).
  • Only cultivated Red Sanders can be exported. Export of wild Red Sanders is completely banned.

Digital Monitoring:

All states must develop digital systems with geo-referenced data to track plantation sites. These systems should record details like the number of trees, their age, and size to ensure sustainable and legal harvesting.
