The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), under the Ministry of Commerce andIndustry, has issued Notification dated April 27, 2026 announcing change in wheat export policy. The government has allowed export of additional quantity of wheat but still main restriction continues .
India had earlier restricted wheat exports to control domestic prices and ensure food availability. This new notification gives limited relaxation but under strict control.
Policy Table from Notification
| ITC(HS) Codes and corresponding description | Existing Export Policy | Existing Policy Condition | Additional Policy Condition |
| 10011900: Durum Wheat: Other | Prohibited | As laid down in DGFT Notification No. 06/2015-2020 dated May 13, 2022 | Export of additional 25 Lakh Metric Tonnes (LMT) of Wheat shall be permitted subject to modalities to be notified via a separate Public Notice |
| 10019910: Wheat | Prohibited | Same as above | Same as above |
This table shows that wheat export is still not freely allowed. It is still under “Prohibited” category. So normal exporters cannot just export anytime.
But government is giving one special permission. It is allowing extra 25 lakh metric tonnes wheat export. This is not open for all, it will follow rules which DGFT will tell later.
Also, old rules from 2022 is still valid. That means if any country ask India for wheat for food security, then government can allow export case by case.
- Export is still banned for general trade
- Only limited quantity is allowed
- Government will control who can export and how
This step is taken because India wants to protect domestic supply but also support some global demand.
For exporters, this means opportunity is there but not easy. They must wait for proper guidelines and approval. For common people, this policy helps in controlling wheat prices in India. At same time, it allows India to help other countries when needed.
