No Directions Given to Banks for Closing Inactive Jan Dhan Accounts: Finance Ministry Denies Reports
The Ministry added that there have been no cases of mass closure of inactive accounts that it is aware of, and the total number of PMJDY accounts in the nation continues to trend upward.

The Ministry of Finance's Department of Financial Services ( DFS ) strongly objects to issuing any direction to banks to close inactive Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) accounts. It has clarified the same amid media reports.
In a statement issued on July 8, 2025, the DFS confirmed that it has not requested that banks close PMJDY accounts that are no longer active. This cleared the rumors that were caused by false information from some media reports.
The Ministry said that rather than closing, work is being done to make financial inclusion even stronger. In order to increase the use of Jan Dhan Yojana accounts and other key social security schemes like the Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana and the Atal Pension Yojana, DFS has started a three-month countrywide campaign that will begin on July 1, added the ministry.

In the course of this operation, banks have been asked to actively contact account holders whose Jan Dhan accounts have been inactive and to perform re-KYC (Know Your Customer) for accounts where it is still outstanding.
The ministry has reminded that the Jan Dhan platform is an important part of the government's financial inclusion and welfare delivery plan. It advised the citizens not to believe rumors.
