The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has announced an extension for filing the Electronic Challan-cum-Return (ECR) for the wage month of September 2025. Employers can now submit their ECRs until October 22, 2025.
The decision was made after several employers requested more time to adapt to the new ECR system that has recently been introduced. EPFO launched a revamped version of its Electronic Challan-cum-Return system starting from the September 2025 wage month.
The new system aims to make the process of filing provident fund returns simpler, faster, and more accurate. It is part of EPFO’s efforts to improve digital services and make compliance easier for employers through its online portal.
According to the EPFO, the revamped system introduces new features that help improve data accuracy, ensure sequential validation of returns, and provide better compliance support.
However, many employers faced initial difficulties in understanding and using the updated system. Taking note of these concerns, EPFO decided to give additional time for employers to become familiar with the changes.
EPFO has started a series of awareness programs and training sessions across the country. At the national level, the organisation has held meetings with major industry associations such as the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI), and the Employers Federation of India (EFI).
These meetings were held to explain the new features, discuss the advantages of the revamped system, and address questions from employers.
EPFO’s zonal and regional offices are also conducting workshops and interactive sessions with employers and establishment representatives. These programs are designed to provide practical guidance and help establishments file their returns correctly under the new system.
EPFO has stated that it remains committed to improving the digital experience for employers and strengthening transparency and compliance in provident fund management. The extension of the filing deadline to October 22, 2025, is expected to help employers adjust smoothly to the new ECR system without facing penalties or disruptions.
