Finance Ministry appoints Special Public Prosecutors

The Finance Ministry has appointed Special Public Prosecutors (SPPs) to represent the Enforcement Directorate (ED) before Special Courts under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002.

The notification enlists 53 advocates across various States and Union Territories as SPPs to prosecute cases on behalf of the ED. Their appointments, effective from the date of notification, will remain valid until the tenure end dates specified against each counsel’s name, extending largely to August 18, 2027, with some terms concluding earlier.

  1. Sh. Ankush Kumar Prajapati, Assistant Legal Advisor – Appointed as SPP with jurisdiction throughout India.

This move might ensure effective prosecution of money laundering cases and is expected to strengthen the Directorate of Enforcement’s ability to pursue high-profile economic offences and ensure faster trial proceedings before PMLA Special Courts.

The appointments are legally binding under the powers vested by the proviso to Section 46(1) of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002. By expanding its prosecutorial panel, the Finance Ministry has reaffirmed its commitment to tightening India’s anti-money laundering framework.
