The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has released a notification, notifying the increased customs tariff value of gold, now marked at $142 per 10 grams.

The new notification dated 29 January 2026 supersedes an earlier notification dated 27 January 2026 by which the rate of silver was increased.

In the latest revision of tariff values under Section 14(2) of the Customs Act, 1962, the CBIC has adjusted reference prices for key imports including precious metals, vegetable oils and metals, in accordance with global price trends.

The key change via this notification comes for gold, whose tariff value now stands at $ 1,709 per 10 grams, a $142 increase over the previous rate, which was notified just two days earlier in Notification No.09/2026-Customs (N.T.) issued on 27 January 2026.

In contrast, silver continues to retain its tariff value at $ 3,545 per kilogram, and areca nuts continue at $ 7,679 per metric tonne (MT).

Customs Tariff Values on Crude palm oil ($1,075/MT), RBD palm oil ($1,084/MT), crude palmolein ($1,088/MT), RBD palmolein ($1,091/MT), and crude soybean oil ($1,173/MT) also remained unchanged.

Similarly, brass scrap (all grades) continue to hold steady at $7,096 per metric tonne across both notifications.

The revised rates notified under the notification dated 29 January 2026 shall take effect from 30 January 2026.

The sharp increase in the gold reference price comes as no surprise, considering the sharp rise in global bullion rates and a weaker dollar index, together leading to a rise in import valuations. The increased rates effectively makes gold imports costlier for jewelers and traders, and shall potentially influence domestic retail prices.

The release of recent revisionary notifications from the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs within short timeframes from each other suggests that the Board has chosen to limit tariff value adjustments only to the most volatile commodities, with the precious metal market being the most relevant.
