The Government of India has finally approved the appointment of 53 Judicial Members to the Goods and Services Tax Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT).
The GST tribunal aims to serve as a dedicated forum for handling disputes under the Goods and Services Tax system. Taxpayers who are unhappy with tax rulings had to take their grievances to the High Courts which often meant long waits and costly litigation. But now, with GSTAT nearly operational, that’s about to change.
Among the new appointees is Justice (Retd.) Mayank Kumar Jain, a former judge of the Allahabad High Court, will join the Principal Bench in New Delhi.
The other 52 Judicial Members have been assigned to State Benches spread across the country. The newly appointed members come from a wide range of legal backgrounds including retired judges, experienced advocates, and seasoned tribunal officers.
Each Judicial Member will receive a fixed monthly salary of Rs. 2,25,000, as per the terms of appointment, and will serve a term of four years or until the age of 67, whichever comes first.
