In a move to strengthen the spirit of ‘Jan Bhagidari’ (People's Participation), the Government of India has officially invited citizens to share their ideas and suggestions for the upcoming Union Budget 2026–2027.

The initiative is launched through the MyGov platform and aims to make the budgeting process more inclusive and also reflects the aspirations of a diverse nation.

The Ministry of Finance, which is on edge of the budget preparation, has called upon a wide spectrum of the population including students, professionals, farmers, entrepreneurs, and retirees to contribute their insights. The government stated that these suggestions will play a crucial role in shaping India’s journey toward becoming a global economic powerhouse.

Key Details of the Initiative:

  • Platform: Citizens can submit their ideas via the MyGov.in portal.
  • Start Date: December 17, 2025.
  • Deadline for Submissions: January 16, 2026, by 5:30 PM IST.
  • Objective: To foster inclusive growth and national progress by incorporating grassroots-level feedback into the annual financial statement.

The government highlighted that this is not merely a symbolic exercise. In previous years, several suggestions received through the MyGov platform have been successfully incorporated into the final Annual Budget.

By opening the doors to public discourse, the Ministry aims to address specific regional needs, sector wise improvements, and innovative economic strategies that might otherwise be overlooked in traditional top-down planning.

To participate, users must log in to the MyGov portal. The platform allows for direct text comments as well as the uploading of PDF documents for those wishing to provide detailed policy papers or technical briefs.

"Your voice truly matters. Be a part of good governance. Your contribution counts in helping the nation rise to even greater heights" the Ministry of Finance stated in its invitation.

As the deadline of January 16 approaches, the government expects a surge in participation, which will then be reviewed by experts and officials at the Ministry of Finance ahead of the Budget presentation in February.

Within several hours of the portal opening, thousands of citizens have already begun sharing their views. Early submissions range from requests for tax reforms and increased standard deductions for the middle class to specific infrastructure projects such as new railway lines and enhanced support for seaweed cultivation.

A significant portion of the feedback also focuses on simplifying the Goods and Services Tax (GST) structure, enhancing interest rates for senior citizen saving schemes, and boosting funding for developed defense technologies.

It is significant to mention that the Union Budget will be passed on February 1, 2026. However, this year, February 1 falls on Sunday. Therefore, the speculation grows whether the budget will be presented on Sunday or will it be presented on the next day.
