GST Filing Nightmare: Users Blame Infosys, CBIC as Portal Fails on Last Day
GST portal glitch on deadline day leaves taxpayers fuming as filings fail and ITC hangs in the balance.

A major section of taxpayers took to social media yesterday to express their outrage after experiencing glitches on the GST portal while filing their GSTR-1 returns just as the quarterly deadline (13th July 2025) expired.
The specific issue reported was related to Table 12 of GSTR-1 (HSN Summary), particularly involving B2C transactions.
This concerns the B2C Table of Table-12 (HSN) of GSTR-1. Table 12B is not mandatory, It can be left blank or filled with any value.

But, Several taxpayers with only B2C sales were unable to proceed when Table 12A (B2B HSN Summary) was left blank despite not having any B2B supplies.
This problem surfaced only when Table 8 (related to nil-rated/exempted invoices) had entries. The portal flagged an error and prevented submission.
As the deadline passed, filers who couldn't submit their returns on time grew furious, claiming that the GSTN’s system failure and lack of prior clarification would now result in penalties and loss of Input Tax Credit (ITC).
To bypass the error:
- If you have no B2B supplies, make one dummy entry in Table 12A.
- You can enter any HSN code and any UQC, and set all other fields (like quantity, taxable value, IGST/CGST/SGST) to zero (0).
This workaround allows the system to validate the return and complete the filing process.
Note: GSTN has stated that the portal will be upgraded soon to allow smoother GSTR-1 filing for pure B2C taxpayers without requiring this additional step.
Public Reaction and GSTN's Response:
A tweet from user @rohitjain2021 captured the public mood:
“Bahut Ghatiya se bhi thoda jyada Ghatiya... Fir aata hai GST Portal. Ab toh samjha do 'Received but pending' kya hota hai?”
He questioned why @cbic_india and the @GST_Council were silent over repeated failures by @Infosys_GSTN, especially when genuine taxpayers might be denied their rightful ITC due to a technical issue.
In response, GSTN posted statistics showing over 80 lakh GSTR-1 filings on July 13, asserting the portal was functioning and the issue was minor and fixed immediately.
S.No | Date | Count of GSTR-1 |
1. | 13th July 2025 | 80,35,313 |
2. | 13th April 2025 | 79,00,094 |
3. | 13th July 2025 | 78,87,679 |
However, users criticized the post, calling it "too little, too late" as the deadline had already passed and many were locked out from timely filing.

Tax experts point out that while GSTN may have handled the issue technically, the lack of timely alerts, helpdesk clarity, or portal guidance puts the burden of workaround knowledge on already stressed taxpayers.
They demand grace periods for technical errors, clearer instructions on optional tables, accountability from Infosys and GSTN and an auto-validation mechanism for nil B2B filers
