A media report has sparked major discussion among CA, CS and CMA students after claiming that the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) is considering setting up a new body called the Indian Institute of Accounting (IIA).

According to a Zee Business report aired on April 13, the proposed institute may handle examinations and curriculum design for three major professional bodies in India. These include the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) and the Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICMAI).

It is important to note that this information is not officially confirmed. As of now, neither MCA nor any of the three institutes has issued any statement on this matter.

What the report claims

The TV report, quoting unnamed sources, said that:

  • MCA has formed a committee of experts to study the idea
  • A new academic body, IIA, may be created
  • It could conduct exams for CA, CS and CMA courses
  • It may also prepare a common or aligned syllabus

At the same time, the report said that core powers like membership, discipline and regulation will remain with ICAI, ICSI and ICMAI.

The idea behind this move is to bring more uniformity and reduce duplication in syllabus across the three courses. It is also said to address concerns that the institutes are not fully aligned with each other.

Reactions and concerns

The news has gone viral on social media, but many professionals have raised doubts. Some practising Chartered Accountants and even ICAI council members have called the report “unfounded” or premature.

Professionals have also raised concerns such as:

  • Loss of independence of existing institutes
  • Possible changes in exam pattern and difficulty level
  • Risk of too much centralisation

If the proposal becomes reality, it could bring a major change in how professional exams are conducted in India. For now, it remains a developing story and more clarity is expected in the coming days.
