Income Tax Portal Downtime: Instant E-PAN Services Unavailable Till August 19, 2025
Taxpayersand applicants across India have been facing a disruption in Instant E-PAN services on the Income Tax Department’s official portal since midnight on August 17, 2025. This temporary unavailability, announced by the authorities, is due to a scheduled maintenance activity aimed at upgrading and enhancing the system’s performance and security.
According to an official notice displayed on the portal, the Instant E-PAN service will remain inaccessible from 12:00 AM on August 17, 2025, until 12:00 AM on August 19, 2025. This means that for a 48-hour period, users will not be able to generate or download their electronic Permanent Account Numbers (E-PAN) through the online platform.
The notice, issued to inform the public in advance, urges applicants to plan their activities accordingly. "Due to scheduled maintenance activity, Instant E-PAN services will not be available from 12:00 AM, 17th August 2025 to 12:00 AM, 19th August 2025. Please plan your activities accordingly," the message reads.
This downtime primarily affects individuals seeking to obtain a new PAN for immediate tax filing or other urgent financial matters. Many users, especially first-time taxpayers, students, and professionals who rely on the instant facility for quick PAN issuance, have been forced to alter their plans.
The downtime also comes at the peak of the income tax filing season, adding to the discomfort for those who intended to complete their filings using PAN allocated instantly online.
Officials from the Income Tax Department have reassured the public that the downtime is necessary for essential system maintenance and will ultimately benefit users through improved security features and faster processing times.
During the outage window, applicants have been advised to either wait for services to resume or apply for a physical PAN card through the conventional process, which takes longer but remains unaffected by the digital maintenance.
The Income Tax Department is expected to restore the Instant E-PAN facility by 12:00 AM on August 19, 2025, resuming normal operations. Meanwhile, users are encouraged to visit the official portal for further updates and to plan their PAN-related activities keeping this window in mind.
