Justice M. Sundar Appointed Chief Justice of Manipur High Court [Read Notification]

The appointment, which was notified on September 13, 2025 shall take effect following the superannuation of the present Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court, Kempaiah Somashekar who shall demit his office on September 14, 2025.

Justice Sundar’s elevation comes following the results of the recommendation made by the Supreme Court Collegium on September 11, 2025. The Collegium endorsed his name for the top post in the North-Eastern state’s Judicial structure. The notification, issued under Article 217(1) of the Constitution, states that Justice Sundar will assume charge as soon as he takes oath in Imphal.

Born on July 19, 1966, in Chennai, Justice M. Sundar graduated in law from Madras Law College as part of the institution’s first five-year integrated course. He then enrolled as an advocate in 1989 and built a wide-ranging civil practice before the Madras High Court. Between 2003 and 2006, he also served as Standing Counsel for the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD) Board.

Justice Sundar was elevated as a permanent judge of the Madras High Court in October 2016 and has since authored several notable judgments. He is currently positioned as the second senior-most judge in the Madras High Court.

Justice Sundar’s appointment at the Manipur High Court is in line with his predecessors such as Justices Ramalingam Sudhakar, M.V. Muralidharan, and D. Krishna Kumar, all of whom were judges of the Madras High Court.

With his assumption of office, Justice Sundar will be responsible for steering the Manipur High Court at a time when the institution faces an expanding docket and rising expectations for judicial efficiency. His experience in civil law and his tenure on the Madras High Court bench are expected to aid his leadership of the High Court in Imphal.

The official notification confirming his appointment has been circulated to the constitutional authorities concerned, including the Governor of Manipur, the Governor of Tamil Nadu and the Registrars General of both High Courts
