The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) has announced the postponement of the Chartered Accountants (CA) examinations which were scheduled to be held on 9th and 10th September 2025 in Kathmandu, Nepal. The postponement comes in light of the widespread protests that have gripped the South-Asian country in recent days.

The official notification No. 13-CA (EXAM)/SEPTEMBER/2025/IV was released by the ICAI’s Examination Department on 8th September 2025, stating that the changes shall affect only candidates who intended to appear for the exam in Kathmandu; examinations in all other centres will continue as scheduled.

ICAI is the statutory governing body for chartered accountants in India, however it conducts Chartered Accountants examinations at numerous overseas centres including Kathmandu, Nepal to cater to Indian students pursuing the Indian CA qualification in other parts of the world.

The postponement comes against the backdrop of escalating unrest in Nepal. Protests led by thousands of youth, popularly known as ‘Gen Z’ protests erupted across the country following the government’s decision to impose a ban on dozens of social media platforms. The protestors have labelled their protests against the alleged widespread corruption within the government over the last few years.

Even though the government revoked the ban after intense backlash, the social situation continued to remain rife as security forces responded with tear gas, water cannons and even live rounds to disperse demonstrators. At least 19 protesters have reportedly died while another 300 have been injured in the violent clashes.

The social crisis deepened further with the resignation of Nepal’s Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak who stepped down from his position on moral grounds after nationwide outrage following the killings. Curfew orders were also imposed in parts of Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Pokhara, Butwal and Itahari. The government also deployed army personnel around the parliament complex to control the situation after protesters breached security barricades.

Opposition leaders, including those from the Rastriya Prajatantra Party and Rastriya Swatantra Party condemned the state’s response, calling it a “massacre” of unarmed young people. Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli expressed grief over the deaths and promised a 15-day inquiry, clarifying that the government was not opposed to social media use, but demanded that they strictly comply with regulatory norms.

ICAI has stated that the revised dates for the postponed exams would be announced shortly, clarifying that apart from the postponement of the two examination dates in Kathmandu, all other particulars and details of the September 2025 CA examinations remain unchanged.

Students have been advised to remain in touch with the official ICAI website for updates. The notice was undersigned by CA. Anand Kumar Chaturvedi, Joint Secretary (Examinations).
