New CBIC Chairman Appointed: Govt Approves Appointment of Vivek Chaturvedi, IRS
Mr. Chaturvedi, a 1990-batch officer of the Indian Revenue Service (Customs & Indirect Taxes), brings over three decades of experience in customs administration, indirect taxes policy, enforcement, and revenue intelligence.

The Central Government has approved the appointment of Vivek Chaturvedi, IRS, as the new Chairman of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes & Customs ( CBIC ). He succeeds Sanjay Kumar Agarwal, who retired from the service with effect from the date of November 28, 2025.
The notice issued on 28 November 2025 by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) of the Department of Personnel & Training confirmed his promotion from his current role as Member, CBIC with immediate effect.
Mr. Chaturvedi, a 1990-batch officer of the Indian Revenue Service (Customs & Indirect Taxes), brings over three decades of experience in customs administration, indirect taxes policy, enforcement, and revenue intelligence.

The appointment order has been forwarded to key stakeholders, including the Prime Minister’s Office and Cabinet Secretariat. The order was confirmed on the same day the former chairman retired.
The notice reads that “The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Shri Vivek Chaturvedi, IRS(C&IT:1990), Member, Central Board of Indirect Taxes & Customs to the post of Chairman, Central Board of Indirect Taxes & Customs (CBIC).”
Mr. Chaturvedi will lead the indirect taxes board and is expected to formulate important decisions for mitigating the indirect taxes arena which is performing very well post-GST rate revision announced by the Prime Minister which came to effect from 22nd September 2025.
