Nitin Gupta IRS Appointed Chairperson of NFRA: New Executive Body Headed by CBDT, Finance Ministry and Income Tax Dept. Veteran

The Ministry of Corporate Affairs has announced that Nitin Gupta, IRS (IT:1986) (Retd.), has officially assumed charge as the Chairperson of the National Financial Reporting Authority (NFRA) effective July 23, 2025.

A civil servant who has undertaken principal positions across various governmental bodies, Gupta previously served as the Chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) from June 2022 to June 2024 and has held several critical positions in the Income Tax Department and the Ministry of Finance over his distinguished career.

During his tenure as CBDT Chairman, Gupta spearheaded reforms to modernise tax administration. He was a central figure in implementing automation and faceless assessment mechanisms, as well as integrating artificial intelligence and big data analytics into the compliance framework.

These initiatives led to record increases in the direct tax-to-GDP ratio and steady year-on-year growth in tax revenues across the years, thus enhancing the efficiency and accountability of India’s direct tax ecosystem.

Alongside Gupta, three full-time members have also taken charge of NFRA’s newly constituted Executive Body:

Smita Jhingran, IRS (IT:1986) (Retd.) has resumed duties as Full-Time Member, NFRA. During her earlier tenure at the Authority, Jhingran played a vital role in aligning India’s auditing and accounting frameworks with global benchmarks. Her professional background includes serving as Secretary to the Competition Commission of India and holding senior roles in the Income Tax Department.

Also assuming full-time member position is P. Daniel, IDES (1989) (Retd.), who previously served as Secretary of the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) where he led national efforts on vigilance awareness, preventive vigilance and anti-corruption across government bodies and PSUs. He was previously associated with the Directorate General of Defence Estates in senior leadership roles focused on digitisation of land records and policy reform in defence land governance.

Also joining the executive body is Sushil Kumar Jaiswal, IA&AS (1993) (Retd.). Jaiswal brings with him experience in financial oversight, having served as Director General of Audit (Central Receipts) where he was responsible for the audit of central revenue and taxation departments. Jaiswal has also represented India in internal audits of UN peacekeeping operations in the Middle East and West Africa and oversaw external audits for several UN agencies including WFP, UNOPS, FAO, and ITC.

The Secretary of the Ministry of Corporate Affairs administered the Oaths of Office and Secrecy to the Chairperson and full-time members during a formal ceremony held at the Ministry on July 23, 2025.
