In a first-of-its-kind move under the Delhi GST system, the Government of NCT of Delhi has announced that no State Goods and Services Tax (SGST) will be charged on tickets for the film Tanvi – The Great. This decision aims to support the message of the film, which promotes values like empowerment, sensitivity, and unity in diversity.

An official order was issued on July 23, 2025, by the Department of Trade and Taxes. It allows cinema halls and multiplexes in Delhi to get reimbursement of the SGST amount that would have been paid on ticket sales for the film. This benefit is subject to strict conditions to ensure viewers actually enjoy reduced ticket prices.

According to the order, ticket rates cannot be increased for the film. The seating arrangement in different classes also must not be changed to create artificial pricing. Instead, cinema halls must reduce ticket prices by the amount of SGST that would have been applied. Viewers will thus not have to pay any State GST for watching Tanvi – The Great.

Multiplexes are still required to deposit the SGST amount into the government account using a prescribed challan, as they would do for any other film. After depositing the tax, they can apply for reimbursement using a form named “Tanvi – The Great Reimbursement”. The government has committed to refunding the SGST amount within sixty days of receiving a verified application.

Every ticket for the film must carry a stamp or e-stamp that clearly says SGST is not being charged, as per Delhi Government orders. This exemption will remain valid for six months from the date of the order.

The order clearly states that if any cinema has already collected SGST from customers before this announcement, that amount will not be reimbursed.

This is the first time a film in Delhi has received such a tax benefit under GST, setting a unique example of how governments can support socially meaningful cinema by making it more affordable to the public.
