The Central Board of Indirect Taxesand Customs (CBIC) has issued Instruction No. 19/2025-Customs to extend the validity of the No Objection Certificate (NOC) for imported alcoholic beverages that are either bottled at origin or in bulk and contain more than 10% alcohol.

The move follows the Food Safety andStandards Authority of India (FSSAI) order dated June 13, 2025, which clarifies that such alcoholic consignments—provided they do not carry an expiry date—will now enjoy a NOC validity of 365 days under the FSS (Import) Regulations, 2017.

In cases where these consignments remain in customs areas for over 365 days, re-validation may be granted after a visual inspection, subject to payment of the requisite inspection fee.

CBIC has instructed all relevant customs and preventive authorities to sensitize officers within their jurisdictions about this updated provision. Stakeholders facing implementation issues have been advised to communicate their concerns to the Board.

This extension aims to streamline the clearance and handling of imported alcoholic beverages, reducing logistical hurdles and improving supply chain predictability for importers.
