In a recent order, the Punjab and Haryana High Court warned lawyers against using mobile phones to search AI or Google during hearings to answer court queries, stating that such conduct disrupts proceedings and reflects lack of preparation.
The case, titled RXXXXXX v. State of Haryana (CRM-M-31392-2025), came up before Justice Sanjay Vashisth. During the hearing, the petitioner’s counsel used a mobile phone to search for information while responding to the Court’s questions.
The petitioner's counsel argued that he was using the phone only to find the required information in response to the Court’s query. The Court observed that this information should have been collected in advance while preparing for arguments, rather than during the hearing.
The single-judge bench comprising Justice Vashisth explained that the court has repeatedly been concerned about advocates using mobile phones in the courtroom, which often causes delays and interruptions. The court pointed out that in an earlier case, Ravneet Singh Sandhu @ Manveer Singh v. UT of Chandigarh (CRM-M-50544-2025), a mobile phone was seized for similar conduct, and the matter was brought to the notice of the High Court Bar Association.
The court directed that a copy of this order be sent to the President and Secretary of the Bar Association so that members may be informed and avoid using mobile phones during hearings to search answers through AI or online platforms. The court warned that repeated violations could lead to stricter action.
The matter has been listed again for hearing on 20 November 2025.
