Senior Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer Ravi Agrawal has been reappointed as the Chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT). He will now continue in this top position until June 30, 2026.

Ravi Agrawal is a 1988-batch IRS officer and is currently working as Member (Administration) in the CBDT. He will take over from Nitin Gupta, a 1986-batch IRS officer, whose extended tenure as CBDT chairman will end on June 30, 2025.

The CBDT is the main policy-making body for the Income Tax Department and manages all direct tax-related matters in the country. It is headed by a chairman and can have six members at the level of special secretary.

According to an official order, Ravi Agrawal was due to retire in September this year, but he will now be reappointed on a contract basis until June 30 next year. This extension will help ensure continuity in leadership within the department, especially as the department continues to work on increasing tax collections and improving taxpayer services.

Ravi Agrawal brings with him over 35 years of experience in the income tax department, where he has handled important roles in tax administration, investigation, and policy implementation. Officials believe his experience will help the department continue reforms and improve the efficiency of tax collection.

The CBDT plays an important role in framing policies for direct taxes, monitoring tax collections, and handling investigations against tax evasion in the country. It is also responsible for ensuring that taxpayer grievances are addressed on time while working to widen the tax base.

With Agrawal taking charge, the CBDT is expected to continue focusing on simplifying tax procedures, using technology to improve compliance, and reducing litigation to make tax administration smoother for taxpayers.

His reappointment comes at a time when the government aims to increase revenue collection while maintaining a taxpayer-friendly approach.
