In a shining tribute to India’s linguistic legacy, the Central Government has officially issued a ₹50 pure silver commemorative coin to mark the Golden Year Celebration of the Official Language Department. The Official Language Department, which plays a pivotal role in promoting and implementing the use of Hindi and other official languages across government institutions, marks its 50th year in 2025.

According to the notification published in the Gazette of India, the commemorative coin has been minted under the authority of the Ministry ofFinance, in line with Section 24 of the Coinage Act, 2011. Weighing 40 grams and made of 99.9% pure silver, the coin is not just a collector’s delight but also a symbol of India’s respect for its constitutional commitment to official language promotion.

The coin is circular in shape with a diameter of 44 mm and features 200 serrations along its edge. Its obverse side showcases the Lion Capital of Ashoka at the centre, with the words “सत्यमेव जयते” inscribed beneath. The left periphery carries the word “भारत” in Devanagari script, while “INDIA” is engraved on the right. Just below the Ashoka emblem, the rupee symbol (₹) and the numeral “50” mark its denomination.

On the reverse side, the coin bears a beautifully crafted lotus design with petals displaying Hindi alphabets — a creative nod to the richness of the language. The central part contains a bold “50” within a circle. Surrounding this are inscriptions in both Hindi and English: “राजभाषा विभाग का स्वर्णिम वर्ष समारोह” and “GOLDEN YEAR CELEBRATION OF OFFICIAL LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT.” The year “2025” sits atop the design, etched in international numerals.

The coin is being hailed not just as a commemorative release but as a testament to India’s multilingual ethos and the central role that language plays in unifying the country. While it is not meant for general circulation, it carries immense numismatic and cultural value, especially for collectors, academicians, and language enthusiasts.
