The Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) will soon launch a new Property Tax Management System (PTMS) to make property tax collection more transparent and efficient. The system has been developed under the directions of the state government’s urban development department.

Under PTMS, every house, shop, and commercial building in the city will be given a unique 16-digit identification number. A number plate with this ID and a chip containing property details will be fixed outside each property. Officials can use this ID to quickly access tax records, pending dues, and other information.

The new system will also use GIS-based mapping. All properties will be uploaded on Google Maps, allowing taxpayers to see their property location and check tax details online. PTMS will be connected to the Smart City Command and Control Centre, giving officials real-time access to property tax data.

Work to install the number plates has already started in parts of Lucknow. A state-level portal has also been created, and senior officials recently reviewed its progress.

PTMS is designed on the lines of the Public Financial Management System (PFMS) and will provide property-wise details of tax demand, collection, and arrears. The rollout is expected to begin soon.

The government hopes this new system will improve compliance, reduce errors, and make property tax management more transparent for citizens.

Similar Efforts in Other States

Lucknow is not the first city to adopt such reforms. Surat in Gujarat has already implemented a GIS-based property tax system, which helped improve compliance and revenue collection. Bengaluru in Karnataka modernized its property tax collection through the BBMP model, which is now being considered for replication elsewhere.
