Tata Steel faces ₹890.52 crore GST notice over ITC claims
Tata Steel said it believes the show cause notice is without merit and confirmed that it will make appropriate submissions within the prescribed timeline.

Tata Steel has received a demand-cum-show cause notice from the Office of the Commissioner of CGST & Central Excise, Jamshedpur, alleging irregular availing of Input Tax Credit (ITC) amounting to ₹890.52 crore for the period from FY 2018-19 to FY 2020-21.

The notice, dated June 13, 2025, was received by the company on June 24 and was disclosed in a regulatory filing on June 25. It cites alleged contraventions under Sections 16 and 41 of the Central Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017, and related provisions under the Integrated GST Act, 2017.
The show cause notice calls upon the company to explain why the ITC amount, along with interest and penalty, should not be recovered. Tata Steel has been asked to appear before the Additional/Joint Commissioner, CGST & Central Excise, Jamshedpur, within 30 days of receiving the notice as reported by Financial Express.

Responding to the development, Tata Steel said it believes the show cause notice is without merit and confirmed that it will make appropriate submissions within the prescribed timeline. The company further clarified that the notice has no impact on its financial, operational, or other activities.
On June 25, 2025, Tata Steel shares closed at ₹156.40 on the BSE, up 1.03% from the previous close.
