Technical Glitches on Maharashtra GST Portal: State Tax Department Relaxes Deadline for Profession Tax Registration and Return Filing
Maharashtra State Tax Department provides relaxation for Profession Tax registration and returns due to technical glitches on Mahagst portal.

In a big relief to taxpayers and professionals across the state the Maharashtra State Tax Department has announced a temporary relaxation for Profession Tax (PT) registration and return filing. The move is in response to technical glitches faced on the mahagst.gov.in portal, where taxpayers were unable to comply with the statutory deadline.
For the last few days, taxpayers accessing the portal for PTEC (Profession Tax Enrollment Certificate) and PTRC (Profession Tax Registration Certificate) have faced many difficulties. These difficulties included failure to log in, slow speed, and the inability to upload documents for monthly and annual returns.
With deadlines approaching the professional community expressed their concerns over the possibility of being charged late fees and interest.
Moreover, with a view to acknowledging these issues, a circular has been issued by the Office of theCommissioner of State Tax offering a grace period for compliances. The department has clarified that any delays in filing returns or obtaining registrations during this glitch prone period will not attract any of the usual consequences if they are completed within the newly specified extension.
Key takeaways from the circular:
- This relaxation would be applicable to the Profession Tax registration (PTEC/PTRC) and the filing of the return itself and the taxpayer must complete registration by 30 April 2026.
- There would be a waiver of the late fees and interest as provided for under the Maharashtra State Profession Tax Act for the period of the technical disruption of compliances due till 30 March 2026.
- There has been a commitment from the department to ensure the technical issues being faced by the mahagst.gov.in portal are resolved to ensure a smooth user experience for future filings.
- This would apply to all taxpayers, as the system errors would have been identified by the backend of the department.
The initiative taken by the tax department of Maharashtra to waive the penalty for taxpayers has been well-received, as it would otherwise place a financial burden on the taxpayers.
