The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the appointment of three Technical Members (State) for the Goods and Services TaxAppellate Tribunal (GSTAT) benches in Uttar Pradesh. This move is to strengthen the functioning of GSTAT in the state and expedite the disposal of pending GST appeals.

According to the order issued by the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, Vivek Kumar, Ananjai Kumar Rai, and Arvind Kumar have been appointed as Technical Members for GSTAT benches located in Lucknow, Varanasi, and Ayodhya, respectively.

Vivek Kumar retired as Member, Commercial Tax Tribunal, Bench-II, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. Ananjai Kumar Rai is currently serving as Member, Commercial Tax Tribunal, Bench-4, Varanasi, while Arvind Kumar retired as Additional Commissioner Grade-I, Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh.

These appointments have been made for a tenure of four years from the date of joining or until the appointees attain the age of 67 years, whichever is earlier. They will receive a monthly salary of Rs. 2,25,000 during their tenure.

The GST Appellate Tribunal plays a key role in resolving GST-related disputes, ensuring consistent interpretation of GST laws, and reducing litigation. The appointments are expected to improve the speed and quality of dispute resolution in Uttar Pradesh, providing relief to taxpayers awaiting the disposal of their appeals.

The appointment order was issued from North Block, New Delhi, under the signature of Under Secretary Kundan Nath, with copies sent to the Prime Minister’s Office and the Cabinet Secretariat for information.

Recently, the Centre notified the operationalisation of 31 GSTAT benches across India to begin hearing appeals from August 2025. This is expected to clear around 1.2 lakh pending GST appeals nationwide, offering faster resolution for taxpayers and reducing litigation pressure on High Courts and revenue authorities.
