Union Budget 2026 to Be Presented on a Sunday for First Time, Confirms Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla
The announcement comes after last week's declaration of the schedule for the parliament’s budget session by Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju

The Union Budget of 2026-27 will be presented on Sunday, 1st of February, for the very first time. Putting an end to all the speculations about whether the budget would be postponed to a weekday, Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla confirmed the date. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present her 9th budget this time.

Traditionally the union budget used to be presented on the 1st of February of every year. This was a practice adopted since 2017 to allow sufficient time for parliamentary approval before the new financial year begins.
This year, February 1st falls on a Sunday raising questions if the same had to be rescheduled to another day. This decision to present the budget on a Sunday will mark a milestone in India’s parliamentary history.

The Times of India reported that President Droupadi Murmu has approved the summoning of both houses of parliament for the 2026 budget session. Phase 1 will begin on February 13, and Phase 2 will begin on March 9
The Economic Survey is expected to be presented immediately after the President’s address, setting the stage for Sitharaman’s budget speech. The budget session is the first parliamentary session held each calendar year.
The budget session is followed by the monsoon session in July-August and the winter session in November-December. This will be Sitharaman’s ninth consecutive budget. This holds her position as one of India’s longest-serving finance ministers.
