Will Union Budget 2026 Break the ‘Sunday’ Rule? Speculation Grows as Feb 1 Nearing
The upcoming Union Budget for 2026-27 will be the 80th since India’s independence and it is also a personal milestone for Nirmala Sitharaman, who will equal former Prime Minister Morarji Desai’s record of presenting eight Budgets.

As the countdown begins for Finance MinisterNirmala Sitharaman’s eighth consecutive Union Budget, a unique calendar conflict has sparked intense speculation. For the first time since the Budget presentation date was shifted to February 1 in 2017, the day falls on a Sunday.
The dilemma is whether the government should stick to the established day of a February 1 presentation or push the announcement to Monday, February 2, 2026.
The presentation of the Union Budget on a weekend is not entirely without precedent. In 2020 and 2025, Sitharaman presented the Budget on Saturdays to ensure that the markets and administrative machinery had ample time to digest the proposals before the start of the new work week.

However, a Sunday presentation is a rarer occurrence. While the Parliament has held special sittings on Sundays in the past notably during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and for the 60th anniversary of Parliament in 2012 doing so for the Budget would require a specific recommendation from the Cabinet Committee on Parliamentary Affairs (CCPA).
Adding another layer of complexity to the 2026 schedule is Guru Ravidas Jayanti, which also falls on February 1. While it is not a national public holiday, it is a significant regional holiday in states like Delhi, Haryana, and Punjab.
Sources indicate that while the Central Government classifies it as a "restricted holiday," Parliament has, in the past, adjourned or cancelled sittings to mark the occasion. If the government decides to honor the holiday, the Budget could potentially be pushed to Monday, February 2.
The Narendra Modi government moved the Budget date from the last day of February to the first day in 2017. The primary objective was to complete the legislative process and ensure the implementation of tax changes and departmental allocations by the start of the new financial year on April 1.
The upcoming Union Budget for 2026-27 will be the 80th since India’s independence. It also marks a personal milestone for Nirmala Sitharaman, who will equal former Prime Minister Morarji Desai’s record of presenting eight Budgets. However, Sitharaman will hold the distinction of presenting all eight consecutively under a single Prime Minister.

With the Winter Session of Parliament having concluded on December 19, all eyes are now on the CCPA to finalize the schedule for the Budget Session. Whether the Finance Minister will "break the Sunday rule" or opt for a Monday for presentation of budget is a much awaited call in the Capital Territory.
