A small juice seller from Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, is in complete shock after receiving an income tax notice demanding Rs. 7.79 crore. The man, Mohammed Rahees, says he has no idea how this happened, as he earns only around Rs. 400 a day by selling juice near the local district court.
According to Telegana Today, Rahees, who lives in the working-class area of Sarai Rehman, received the notice on March 18, 2025. He said he was completely confused when he saw the letter and didn’t even understand what it meant at first. “I asked my friends to help me read and understand it,” he said. “They told me it’s a notice from the Income Tax Department asking me to pay Rs. 7.79 crore.”

Worried and unsure of what to do, Rahees went to a lawyer who advised him to collect his bank account records and other documents so a proper reply could be written before the deadline on March 28, 2025.

Rahees supports his elderly and sick parents with his small daily income. He said the notice has caused him extreme stress and anxiety. “My blood pressure has gone up. I haven’t been able to sleep. I don’t understand how something like this can happen to someone like me,” he said. He also mentioned that his mother, who already suffers from depression, has become even more worried after hearing about the situation.

Although the exact reason behind the huge tax demand is still unclear, people suspect that it could be due to an error, identity theft, or misuse of his personal information. Many believe such cases show how small business owners and workers can become victims of mistakes or problems in the system.

This is not the first time something like this has happened. Earlier this year, a pani puri seller also received a GST notice for Rs. 40 lakh, which led to public anger and discussion about how fair the tax system is for small earners.

Rahees is now hoping that the authorities will look into the matter and understand that he is just a poor juice seller, not someone who owes crores in taxes. “I just want to live peacefully and earn my daily bread,” he said.
