The Income Tax Department, in a final warning to taxpayers and PAN Card-holders, recently tweeted in its Official Twitter handle that, “As per Income-tax Act, 1961, it is mandatory for all PAN holders, who do not come under the exempt category, to link their PAN with Aadhaar before 31.3.2023.”
The tweet also said that, “From 1.04.2023, the unlinked PAN shall become inoperative.”
“Please don’t delay, link it today!”, the department further appealed to those yet to link their PAN Cards with Aadhar.
Recently, the Income Tax Department in India disclosed the status of PAN-Aadhar linking for individuals, following multiple warnings to taxpayers. Aadhar and Permanent Account Number (PAN) have become indispensable components of daily life for the common people, with each serving a distinct purpose. Currently, the focus of discussion is on the mandatory linking of Aadhaar with PAN, with a deadline of March 2023.
According to the Chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), out of the 61 crore PANs issued to individuals, about 48 crore have already been linked to Aadhaar. The Chairman has clarified that individuals who do not link their Aadhaar with PAN will not be eligible for any tax or business-related benefits.
Any PAN Card that remains unlinked to Aadhaar by the end of this financial year (March 31, 2023) will be considered invalid. Additionally, it is necessary to spend Rs. 1,000 to complete the PAN-Aadhaar linking process by the March 31 deadline.
Individuals who have not yet linked their PAN with Aadhar can visit the Income Tax Portal to complete the linking at the earliest. If you are unsure of your PAN-Aadhar linking status, visit the official PAN Aadhaar Linking Check website to verify the same. You need to have your PAN, Aadhar number and Date of Birth handy to link and verify the status.
One of the stakeholders experiencing technical issues replied to the tweet that “sir we are facing technical issue while linking, if same error continues till 31st march 2023, the who will responsible for this.”
The reply by the official twitter handle stated, “We request you to share your details (along with PAN & mobile number) with us at orm@cpc.incometax.gov.in for our team to get in touch with you for assistance.”
