The West Bengal government, in response to concerns raised by stakeholders regarding issues related to e-way bills, has decided to suspend the implementation of the order that reduced the “intrastate e-way bill” threshold from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 50,000.
This decision, retrospectively effective from December 1, was communicated through a gazette notification published in the Kolkata Gazette on Thursday.
The move to keep the mid-November notification in abeyance, as stated by state GST Commissioner Khalid Anwar, was made “in the public interest” and is applicable with retrospective effect. Anwar clarified that the intra-state movement limit would remain at Rs 1 lakh, and as a result of the suspension, there would be no e-way bill requirement for job work within the state.
The initial notification, which aimed to align the intrastate e-way bill threshold with the national standard of Rs 50,000 and mitigate GST slippage, has been temporarily halted. The state government’s objective was to achieve consistency with the rest of the country, where the threshold for interstate goods movement is Rs 50,000.
Additionally, the previous notification sought to eliminate any ambiguity between interstate and intrastate limits while addressing concerns related to tax evasion.
The Confederation of West Bengal Dealers Association had previously expressed its reservations, asserting that the Rs 50,000 limit imposed an unnecessary compliance burden on small and marginal traders.
