The Customs officers of the Anti-smuggling unit at Guwahati Customs intercepted an individual travelling by train at Guwahati Railway Station, Assam. Acting on specific intelligence, the officers discovered 26 pieces of gold concealed inside the waistline of the individual’s trousers. The total weight of the seized gold amounted to 2401.31 grams.

Upon inspection, it was revealed that the gold pieces had a purity of 99.9% and were of 24 karat quality. However, no legitimate documentation pertaining to the possession of the gold was found in the apprehended individual’s possession. The estimated value of the seized gold is yet to be determined. One individual has been apprehended in connection with this case, and further investigations are ongoing.

Very recently, the Guwahati Customs also seized gold bars and coins from an individual aboard the Guwahati-Bangalore Express. The illicit haul, weighing a total of 1997.96 grams/ 19.9kg, was found in the possession of the individual without any valid documentation.

The total value of the seized gold in this case amounts to a staggering ₹1.28 crore, underscoring the substantial scale of the illegal activity intercepted by the customs authorities.

Recently, the Mumbai Zonal Unit of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence has arrested two individuals believed to be instrumental handlers within the gold smuggling network. The arrest took place at a hotel in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, following the seizure of 4 kg of illicit gold, valued at ₹2.59 crore, at the Mumbai International Airport on January 16.
