The  Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has seized 3.22kg of black cocaine worth Rs. 32 crores in Ahmedabad International Airport. The DRI foiled the attempt to smuggle the cocaine to India. The investigation is in process.

The Information received indicated that a Brazilian national would try to smuggle cocaine into India while travelling from Sau Paulo Airport to the Ahmedabad International Airport.

The aforementioned Brazilian national was detained by DRI personnel at Ahmedabad International Airport. The aforementioned passenger was on a tourist visa. A thorough inspection of the passenger, trolley and cabin baggage revealed no evidence of hiding.

The DRI officials did note, however, that the base and walls of the aforementioned two bags contained an exceptionally thick rubbery material that was extremely fragile and was turning granular under pressure.

Using a specialised field-testing tool, a team of forensic science lab personnel investigated the substance and discovered the presence of cocaine. As a result, 3.22 kg of the material were seized in accordance with the NDPS Act of 1985. The traveller admitted to playing a direct role in transporting cocaine and was subsequently detained.

A synthetic drug known as “black cocaine” is made by blending cocaine with charcoal and other substances to give it a black, rubbery appearance that can be used to obstruct detection by canines and field-testing equipment. This is the first time “Black Cocaine” has been seized by DRI, and the method used to smuggle it is also unusual.

Recently, the DRI has seized the import of 1.92 kg Cocaine by way of concealment inside the thermocol balls. It was determined that this method of transporting drugs (cocaine) into India via courier was completely new. The thermocol balls that were allegedly used to cushion the claimed items were where the cocaine was supposedly concealed.
