Exemption from PAN-Aadhar Linking: Know if You Need to urgently Link or not

PAN - Aadhar - Linking - urgently - Link - TAXSCAN

The Income Tax Department, in a final warning to taxpayers and PAN Card-holders, recently tweeted in its Official Twitter handle that, “As per Income-tax Act, 1961, it is mandatory for all PAN holders, who do not come under the exempt category, to link their PAN with Aadhaar before 31.3.2023.”

Nevertheless, there are certain exceptions to this requirement. In accordance with a notification circulated by the Union Finance Ministry in May 2017, there are four groups of individuals who are not required to link their PAN with Aadhaar.

These groups are as follows:

  • Individuals who are residents of Assam, Meghalaya, and the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
  • Non-residents as defined in the Income-tax Act of 1961.
  • Individuals who are 80 years of age or above at any point during the previous year.
  • Individuals who are not citizens of India.

However, it should be noted that the exemptions listed above are subject to modifications based on the latest government notifications. Apart from the aforementioned exempted categories, all other individuals are required to link their PAN with their Aadhaar as per the mandate.

If you do not belong to these categories, it is advised to check the PAN-Aadhar Linking Status and link, if you haven’t already.

Individuals who have not yet linked their PAN with Aadhar can visit the Income Tax Portal to complete the linking at the earliest. If you are unsure of your PAN-Aadhar linking status, visit the official PAN Aadhaar Linking Check website to verify the same.

You need to have your PAN, Aadhar number and Date of Birth handy to link and verify the status.

To link your PAN with Aadhaar, follow these simple steps:

  1. Go to the official Income Tax e-filing website at eportal.incometax.gov.in or incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in.
  • If you haven’t registered on the portal yet, use your PAN as the user ID to create a new account.
  • Log in to the portal using your credentials.
  • A pop-up window will appear, prompting you to link your PAN with Aadhaar. Alternatively, you can click on “Link Aadhaar” under “Profile Settings” on the Menu bar.
  • Your name, date of birth, and gender will be pre-filled based on your PAN details.
  • Verify the information with your Aadhaar card. If the details match, enter your Aadhaar number and click on “Link Now”.
  • You will receive a message confirming that your Aadhaar has been successfully linked to your PAN.
