An FIR was filed against a group of police officers who bribed a truck driver for Rs. 10,000 by impersonating as state Goods and Services Tax (GST) officials. The group blocked the truck and demanded cash.
According to the reports, the group blocked the cement carrying truck. The driver was requested to provide vehicle documentation before being informed that the truck will be confiscated since the “papers are not complete.” The driver begged them not to impound the car, but they demanded the bribe.
To get out of the trouble, the driver asked his friend to make the payment online as he ran out of cash. On Sunday, an FIR in the matter was lodged at the Panki police station. Along with the complaint, he also submitted the screenshot of the payment made.
In November, 2022, two fake GST officers were arrested in Hyderabad. It was reported that they made people invest in business transactions promising them that items such as gold, cement, steel and liquor were given without GST to gain extra profits. The accused persons reportedly carried out transactions with 18 victims to the tune of ₹28 crores.
Another case was reported recently that three persons were arrested by Surat Police after executing a bogus raid on a textile store and extorted 12 lakh rupees from a businessman in which one of them was an original GST official.
The policemen reported that the arrested persons were charged with extortion related sections. Also, as one of the accused was a government official, thus additional offences under the Prevention of Corruption Act were added. Moreover, three Maharashtra GST officials were dismissed through newspaper for conducting a fake raid in the premises of a businessman and looting Rs. 11 lakhs from him.
